(I don’t know where it is, I suspect somewhere closer to knuckles) Looks like they are doing those sorts of things regularly for their foreign traveling clients. There is a picture of a dead fish on the top of the page, looks like a stone sucker and we have 2 stone sucker species here in Sri Lanka and both are endemic. This one looks like a Garra ceylonensis Phillipsi (පිලිප්ගේ ගල් පඩියා).

I don’t care where those poisons come from, a bottle or from a tree or even from the grandmother’s kitchen. Poison are poison. Period. And it is illegal to fish with poison. It won’t only kill big fishes; before that it kills babies, eggs and every other living moving things around it. It is wrong. It is bad. It is terrible.

I know villages should have rights to survive using the habitat around them. But it should not be having a wonderful day to someone else. Even it may be a simple side dish for the villages, but it is destroying an endemic species forever.

I understand we should open our villages to tourists but not to these sorts of things. Feed our guests with Kiri Bath or hoppers even fried Thilapia is most wonderful, but not endemic fishes killed with poisons. This is a crime.

I don’t know is everything here is true or not, but I thought its funny. If its funny, it don’t have to be true. Here we go...

"O M Weerasooriya has done a wonderful job by writing this poem but there is something that we would like you to know. A rich country will collect 20 to 35% as taxes. A developing country will collect 35 to 42.5% as taxes. Today Sri Lanka collects 63% as taxes. From every 100 rupees you earn, 63 rupees will go back to the government as taxes. This means Sri Lanka is heading towards disaster like Zimbabwe which collects a whopping 88%."
(Mr. OM Weerasooiya is a Retired Commissioner General of Inland Revenue and a Corporate Member of Sri Lanka Institute of Taxation and former Treasurer of Netherlands Alumni Association of Lanka.)

Tax his land,
Tax his bed,
Tax the table
At which he's fed.

Tax his tractor,
Tax his mule,
Teach him taxes Are the rule.

Tax his work,
Tax his pay,
He works for peanuts Anyway!

Tax his cow,
Tax his goat,
Tax his pants,
Tax his coat.
Tax his ties,
Tax his shirt,
Tax his work,
Tax his dirt.

Tax his tobacco,
Tax his drink,
Tax him if he
Tries to think.

Tax his cigars,
Tax his beers,
If he cries
Tax his tears.

Tax his car,
Tax his gas,
Find other ways
To tax his ass.

Tax all he has
Then let him know
That you won't be done
Till he has no dough.

When he screams and hollers;
Then tax him some more,
Tax him till
He's good and sore.

Then tax his coffin,
Tax his grave,
Tax the sod in
Which he's laid.

Put these words
Upon his tomb,
'Taxes drove me
to my doom...'

When he's gone,
Do not relax,
A pretty princess she was they say. A strong and fearless woman she was, I think. But let alone having voting rights for the only woman happened to be in the Temple of tooth board, they even do not let woman get closer to the tooth relic anymore.

Sri Maha bodi, the holly tree, brought to Sri Lanka by a woman. A princess turned a Buddhist monk they say. Regardless woman are not welcome to pass the fence around any Bodi tree, a fence that often happened to be made with Gold for some strange reason I don’t understand let alone why we have a fence in the first place.

We don't stop there; our Sinhalese Buddhists go on making new laws in the name of Buddhism and even monks walk in to politics in the name of Buddhism too. I often wonder who is correct, Buddha or our Sinhalese Buddhists. Since Sinhalese Buddhists are often correct, it is safe to bet Buddha was utterly wrong by leaving politics in the first place and becoming a simple monk. He should have stay in the power, and become an emperor like Genghis Khan or at least a government minister like one of those Buddhist monks in Sri Lanka, and create all sorts of laws.

Before I get distracted by those hypocrisy business, what I really wanted to talk about is, those two baby elephants that people at temple of tooth snatched last week from their mothers in Pinnawala elephant orphanage and brought to Kandy to be working elephants. It is bothering me. Anyone with a tiny bit of knowledge about elephants knows elephants are highly emotional and have strong and long lasting parent-child relationships. And if those people at temple of tooth have their own children, they should have known how strong that love could be. Even if they don’t have own children for a quick comparison, they could have easily refer any Buddhist teachings widely available on the Internet, that often describe mothers love is the strongest love in the world. Wildlife researchers say all those killer elephants are orphans with terrible childhood memories. Since they are wildlife researchers and research is what they do, we have to believe it is true. But you don’t need to read research papers to understand that, just sit comfortably in a safe place and look form distance at a family of elephants in wild. But sadly, those people at temple of tooth have not done any of that.

News says Elephants mothers at Pinnawala orphanage still crying and injuring themselves, as mammals naturally do when they are emotionally devastated. So does the babies. According to the same news, one baby already broke his tusk. May be they just want to die. This whole incident remind me of the Japanese movie call පුන්චි ඇත් පැටවා , which subtitled by an absolute genius name Titus Thotawaththa.

I do understand Elephants are part of our culture and we need them as working animals and it won’t be a perfect deal all the time. But since we humans claim ourselves better than animals, we should have treated them with little bit more kindness and understanding. May be good people at temple of tooth thought, Elephants may not have souls and they were created for us to use as we wish. If so, they are wrong. James Herriot said "If having a soul means being able to feel love and loyalty and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans." and James Herriot is right.

If I can, I would like to do terrible things to those people who do terrible things to animals. Or at least force them to sit down and watch පුන්චි ඇත් පැටවා till they cry with self shame.
But when someone applies those boring theories in to real life, they get undoubtedly fascinating, just like my grandmothers cooking. The simple idea behind Butterfly Effect is, a butterfly in Africa flapping its wings, may create a ripple effect that end up as a cyclone in America or some other continent. Even though, to me that argument sounded like a bad excuse for not doing home work, a mathematician may prove it using hieroglyphics on large blackboards, as they usually do.

I was reading the news about unrest in China this week. A 19 year old Han Chinese girl working as a trainee in a toy factory lost her way to her dormitory. I don’t know how she managed to lost her way, but I like to imagine, it may be a boy with his hands in his pockets, whistling at passing girls, leaning and covering the signpost which pointed toward the girl’s dormitory, cause her to lose her way. Whatever the reason it may be, she ended up opening a door of a room to some Uygur young men. Having seen unexpected men in the room and realizing that was not her dormitory, she screamed and runaway. I don’t know why she decided to do that, but girls usually very good at creating drama when they are occasionally embarrassed. The girl went on her way to her friends and spends night with them.

I don’t know how other Han workers got to know that either. But I like to imagine one Han guy bored that day because of some minor reason, smoking a cigarette looking outside his window, wearing nothing but his underwear, saw a Han girl screaming and running away from a room occupied by some young Uygur boys. Hans and Uygurs been belong to two deferent ethnic groups, they agreed upon doing exact thing any number of ethnic groups suppose to do in such a situation. Fight with each other, while continually informing and inviting others on mobile phones. So they did just that. As lethal as Chinese fights are reputed to be, the fight overflowed from the dormitory to the factory and from factory to the city causing more than 160 people dead. Chinese government deployed 1000s of solders to the region and pronounce anyone involved in fighting will be executed. That means more dead people. Meanwhile Chinese president, who was working on fixing the global economic crises with G8 leaders, had to stop all that good work and fly back home right away to address the Han vs Uygurs fight, causing further delays improving the global economy. Now, that is what I like to call The Butterfly Effect and that is how our little lives effected most of the time. But we rather like to think we have significant control of everything around us, or at least we know a fellow who we can bribe by cheap praises regularly and get him to control situations. But that is not really the case. A girl walking in to a wrong building in China, may create a situation that cause you to lose your job in Sri Lanka.

I’m pleased. India is not only progressing in economic front, but most importantly in moral front also. Such a country will never fail.

There are few none Muslim countries in the world still practices this horrible colonial law of outlawing same sex relationships and Sri Lanka is a one of those horrible countries. Last year United Nations made a request to all those countries to consider relaxing those awful colonial laws, but Sri Lanka refused them as always under the pressure of Churches, specially Mormon Church which acquired significant power over our government recently. Our Penal Code 365A which ban gay relationships as unnatural act, amended by G.L. Peiris in 1995 under the supervision of Catholic Church, added lesbians also in to that.

One of my religious friends told me, the world is coming to the end because of our tolerance against homosexuals. Economic problems, global warming, earthquake and such things are results of our behavior against God. Well, if that is so, let gays go to hell. And if by letting homosexuals have their rights, if we also go to hell, let us go to hell too. It is better to go to hell doing the right than go to heaven doing the wrong.

Is he a dictator? Is he a new royalty or is he simply everybody’s uncle? Those are difficult questions. So here I collect some facts about him. Hope you find them interesting.

Mahinda Rajapaksa can sneeze with his eyes open.

When Mahinda Rajapaksa looks in a mirror the mirror shatters, because not even glass is stupid enough to get in between Mahinda and Mahinda.

Mahinda Rajapaksa does not know where you live, but he knows where you will die.

Bullets dodge Rajapaksa.

If you spell Rajapaksa wrong on Google it doesn't say, "Did you mean Rajapaksa? " It simply replies, "Run while you still have the chance."

Google won't search for Mahinda Rajapaksa because it knows you don't find Mahinda Rajapaksa, he finds you.

It takes Mahinda Rajapaksa 12 minutes and 40 seconds to watch Sirasa Ran-Depeya.

Lysol claims they can kill 99.9% of germs. Mahinda Rajapaksa kills 100 percent of whatever he wants.

There is no such thing as global warming. Mahinda Rajapaksa was cold, so he turned the sun up.

Ghosts are actually caused by Mahinda Rajapaksa killing people faster than Death can process them.

In an average living room there are 1,242 objects Mahinda Rajapaksa could use to kill you, including the room itself.

Mahinda Rajapaksa couldn’t enter Mortal Kombat, because Rajapaksa is no mortal.

Behind every successful man, there is a woman. Behind every dead man, there is Mahinda Rajapaksa.

With the rising cost of Kerosene, Mahinda Rajapaksa is beginning to worry about his drinking habit.

There is no theory of evolution. Just a list of creatures Mahinda Rajapaksa has allowed to live.

Outer space exists because it's afraid to be on the same planet with Mahinda.

Aliens DO indeed exist. They just know better than to visit a planet that Mahinda Rajapaksa is on.

We live in an expanding universe. All of it is trying to get away from Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Mahinda doesn’t wear a watch, HE decides what time it is.

Mahinda Rajapaksa invented black. In fact, he invented the entire spectrum of visible light. Except pink. Ranil Wickramasinghe invented pink.

Mahinda Rajapaksa recently had the idea to sell his urine as a canned beverage. We know this beverage as Elephant House Ginger Beer.

Nothing can escape the gravity of a black hole, except for Mahinda Rajapaksa. Mahinda Rajapaksa eats black holes. They taste like string hoppers.

In a fight between Rama and Ravana, the winner would be Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Mahinda Rajapaksa never wet his bed as a child. The bed wet itself out of fear.

The 11th commandment is “Thou shalt not piss off Mahinda Rajapaksa” This commandment is rarely enforced, as it is impossible to accomplish.

Mahinda Rajapaksa has volunteered to remain on earth after the Rapture; he will spend his time fighting the Anti-Christ.

In the Bible, Jesus turned water into wine. But then Mahinda Rajapaksa turned that wine into beer.

Mahinda Rajapaksha doesn't need a miracle in order to split the ocean. He just walks in and the water gets the fuck out of the way.

When God said, "Let there be light", Mahinda Rajapaksha said, "say please."

When Arnold says the line "I'll be back" in the first Terminator movie it is implied that is he going to ask Mahinda Rajapaksa for help.

The pen is mightier than the sword, but only if the pen is held by Rajapaksa.

Rules of fighting: 1) Don't bring a knife to a gun fight. 2) Don't bring a gun to a Rajapaksa fight.

In Sri Lanka there is a legend that a warrior name Mahasona, with a wild boar head and human body rules the dark night. That man is not Mahinda Rajapaksa. Because he killed that man.

Somawansa is allowed to live because Rajapaksa doesn't kill women.

Mahinda Rajapaksa does not know about this blog. If he did, he would have just deleted the internet.

Before become the president, Mahinda Rajapaksha was originally cast as the main character in 24, but was replaced by the producers when he managed to kill every terrorist and save the day in 12 minutes and 37 seconds.

If it looks like chicken, tastes like chicken, and feels like chicken but Mahinda Rajapaksha says its beef, then it's fucking beef.

Mahinda Rajapaksha doesn't have hair on his testicles, because hair does not grow on steel.

Death once had a near-Mahinda-Rajapaksha experience.

The only time Mahinda Rajapaksha was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistake.

Real Time with Bill Maher is one of the top liberal US political shows and a good one too. This time, in this interview, she went on saying "you have to understand in Sri Lanka, not a single Sinhalese person is been convicted of a crime for 60 years". And Bill was surprised by that statement, and so does I. Bill ask "Any Crime?" and she said "No". Bill asked again "Not even shop lifting?" and she said "nothing."

I don’t know what to say about these kind of talk. Can I say it is a lie? If I say that, wouldn’t I imply you are idiot without what so ever self judgment?

I don’t know what it is to a parent to lose a child, but I know what it is to have a child. And I can’t possibly imagine how a parent could bear lost of a child.

1000 people dead one say, 2000 people dead say others. Just numbers, anonymous people, rounded up to last digits for our convenience. But they all are people with faces, legs and hopes, some are parents to a child like our parents and some child to a parent like our children.

As a citizen in a democratic country, I have a moral and civil responsibility to what our army is doing. If Sri Lankan Army shelled on those civilians, they should burn in hell, we all should burn in hell, because we know better, because we have other options. We drag this war more than a quarter century. I know every single day it drag further, it only bring suffering to everyone, but we could wait couple of more days, couple of more weeks, if needed couple of more months. We don’t have to risk large number of civilians. We shouldn’t have risk children. There are other options. There are better options.

But at this moment, I’m willing to accept government’s version of the story and give benefit of the doubt to Sri Lankan Army, only because LTTE does not have any military power that they can use for a victory or even for survival against Sri Lankan military, but they still don’t want to surrender, because they have a single card left, which they have been using quite vigorously and successfully. Civilians. They keep on holding thousands of civilians that they collected on their retreat, not to keep as pets, or as hotel guests, but for their military use, just like bullets, buckets and such other objects that they may dispose for their tactical benefit. And Canadian and British LTTE members propagate civilian death to the maximum military benefit of LTTE. More civilians die, more children die, more advantage they collect. Attract enemy fire on to civilians or deliberately killing civilians for propaganda, always has been fully working tactic for LTTE. In the absent of military power, I don’t think LTTE is sitting around a table playing cards with each other smoking cigars, or drinking tea or reading comic books. They are working on the only tactic left for them to reach their goal – a ceasefire. That is kill civilians, thousands by thousands, until so call “international community” forces government to go to a truce. It is brutal tactic. But it is a working tactic. It is bloody working tactic.

I guess you have seen above Channel 4 News piece and wonder who those shadowy figures are. I’m here to put your mind to rest - that was me, the first shadowy figure with the title “Aid worker”. The second guy is one of my good friends. Now before you say anything, I just want to say, it is nothing personal, just pure british way of investigative journalism. I’m just doing my job. Nevertheless, we were paid handsomely and we were also told there is a big possibility for us to get UK visa with the help of Channel 4.

We shoot this little news piece in Juliana hotel in Kolpity, where we all had a very good time with very most gorgeous ladies. If you listened to news piece carefully, I almost blow the whole thing up with the story, “the dead woman with worms coming out of the mouth, while children playing around her”. But I could have blow this up big time, if I said what I was really about to say. A woman was dead for days and her few weeks old baby trying to feed on her breast. I saw that sort of a scene in a movie, I think it was in the HBO miniseries Rome. But luckily, last minute I thought it would be overly dramatic.

The video footage of the camp, well, I was able get that copy for Channel 4 from a friend of mine, a DIG in the Police, from the police video unit. As you see, even my DIG friend’s driver, Corporeal Samaranayaka, is in that video in his uniform. I know the video does not synch very much with the storyline. But the video cost us only a diner, few bottles and a trip to the heath center at Galadari hotel, where my DIG friend spend couple of happy hours with most beautiful ladies. But Isn’t it priceless when present as a secret hidden footage from a death camp in a third world country, with the soft sad narrative in the backgroud?

The news crew from Channel 4 was wonderful. I met those British journalists who break the story of “Rubina Ali’s father (Slumdog Millioner child actress) trying to auction his daughter shamelessly, to the highest bidder, as those people in third world countries often do”. If you remember, Indian police found out it was a made up story and her father never tried to auction his daughter, as British media claimed. But story was already sold for a price you won’t believe, and it was a top story all over the world. Anyway, no one believes Indian police or any other authority from any third world countries. Third world countries are always corrupt and without whatsoever moral values. Everyone in developed countries knows that. So it do not have to be a "real story", as long as it provide enough shocking value and the sense of moral superiority to the audience (journalist students – take notes). Before you say anything bad about these guys, who are trying to make a living, I want to tell you, it is not like they are holding a bottle of fake “yellowcake” in UN meeting, cooking up a reason to invade another country or something like that. These are just innocent news stories.

I know, some may deeply question the validity of this post and rightfully so. Some always do. So let me tell you something. I know, I’m a blogger, not a journalist. But when I write a post, I try my best to follows same journalistic standards Channel 4 and other numerous British news organizations proudly follows. So if you have any questions about the validity of this story, please contact Channel 4. I made my claim, I know it is shocking, and claims without proofs are just humbug to intelligent mind, But I’m a shadowy figure, and you can not quection shadowy figures. So now it is Channel 4's turn to deny my claim, if they are not true.

They usually jump out of perfectly fine air planes and call it sky diving or engage in horrible activity call bungee jumping. But not everyone can personally put their lives in such risks for their own amusement, so they find something exciting in mass scale between each Olympic. One time they waited till air plans to drop out from the sky and world to end, and called it Y2K. And this year they find something new, called it Swine flu.

Swine flu is a flu presumably originated in Mexico as they say, and so far around 20 people died out of around 800 confirmed cases. This brings perfect drama for white people to start panicking, and we follow white people as ducklings as we usually do, start testing passengers with flu like symptoms in our Airport and discuses about it while we are getting drunk. But meanwhile, plain old flu, causes 500,000 deaths each year, but it is too common and has no theatrical value in it. Something new gives governments a reason to spend large amount of money on vaccinations and such things, that to be throw away unused in couple of years and drug companies to make large sum of money like it is Christmas. News corporations also get chance to report something all day without spending bit of money on camera crews or journalists.

Swine flu is a virus like any other flu, and virus as they usually do in their spare times, engages in evolution. But some people who do not believe in evolution in the first place, thrilled by the Swine flu, so they can say, “Look! Look! We were correct; pigs are bad, dirty and unholy! Since we are correct this time, we are correct all other times!! You unbelievers will go to hell and bake live in slow heat”. But the sad story is, they were not able to find any pig with swine flu virus yet, even if it is called swine flu. So black pork curries are still delicious as they been for past couple of thousand years and it will continue to feed us for years to come.

I’m not saying we should not protect ourselves from swine flu, or any other flu, but all I’m saying is normal dull old flu is far more dangerous and deadlier than the swine flu. And H1N1 flu as they call it now, will evolutes in to something else next year, if not in next couple of months.

LTTE is an international crime and terrorist organization base in "Western world", Countries such as Britain, Canada and Australia and operates mainly in Asian countries such as Malaysia, Sri Lanka and India.

Who are LTTE members?
Majority of LTTE members are British and Canadians, mainly from tribal areas of those countries. Also there are significant number of cadres, mainly children and woman, forcibly recruited in Asian countries such as Sri Lanka for their suicide operations. The figurehead leader and the founder of the organization is still a Sri Lanka citizen.

Are they Terrorists?
Most of the countries consider LTTE as a terrorist organization. Even Canadian and British governments accept LTTE as terrorist organization. FBI named LTTE as the world most dangerous terrorist organization. But western publications, such as Huffington Post do not consider LTTE as a terrorist organization, rather like to generalize as a Guerrilla organization. Regardless, LTTE is the inventor of suicide belt, and carried out more suicide attacks on civilians, combined Al Qaeda and all other terrorist organizations combine.

Is there any deferent between Al Qaeda and LTTE?
Yes. Al Qaeda is an organization base on East and operates in West. And LTTE is an organization base on West and operate in East.

What LTTE wants?
Just like Taliban, they want a country of their own to carry out their operations. Their immediate goal is to carve out a separate country from the island of Sri Lanka. They have already explored the possibilities in Malaysia and they are highly active in southern part of India also.

Who funds LTTE?
Tax. LTTE successfully operate complex tax code in tribal areas of Canada, UK and other western countries, separated from the government taxes. Every tribal family supposes to make monthly wage to LTTE tax collectors, who have freedom to use that money on their personal businesses for three months. Also they are largely involved in piracy in Indian Ocean, sex slavery in Thailand, human smuggling Singapore and surrounding countries, and credit card frauds across Europe. According to Jane's Intelligence Centre, LTTE is the world most profitable terrorist organization.

Is there any connection between current genocide in Sri Lanka and LTTE?
Unfortunately Yes. They have successfully committed 4 acts out of 5, which each considered as "genocide" under internal law by creating this unfortunate situation right now. They have wiped out every single Sri Lankan from North and East of the country, mainly by slaughtering complete villages overnight or forcibly keeping them as human shield. Also deliberately inflicting on Sri Lankans conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole, by destroying economy of the country and livelihood of Sri Lankans. And even at this moment, they are actively engage in blocking IMF loan Sri Lanka is seeking to survive the global finical crises and blocking other commercial transactions to rebuild the life of people in north and east part of the country.

Can Sri Lanka Eliminate LTTE?
No. even once LTTE’s military operations completely failed in Sri Lanka, it will not stop their activities significantly. As long as LTTE operate in Tribal areas of those countries, they will continue to plan attack on Asian countries like Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia, etc.. and our way of life.

But for strange reason, Norwegians also joined this disgraceful club this week by vandalizing the Sri Lankan embassy.

Sri Lanka is a poor country with much corruption, a war, and so many other things we are not proud of. We are number 20 in failed states list. But we never failed to protect our embassies to our best, even while we vigorously protest front them for so many reasons. Norway is a beautiful country, with peaceful, soccer loving people. I can’t understand what made Norwegians to behave like Afghan or Somali terrorists. Maybe they were having too much Absolute this week. Or maybe they were having Lutefisk with too much lye, since last Christmas. Or may be Norway is a failed state like so many other failed states around the world. Whatever the reason it may be, I would like to pass my friend Ole a little advice I received from my class teacher in the unholy days of JVP era. "If you sleep with dogs, you will wake up with ticks".

I’m not writing any of my own opinions, since it is not really necessary.

Pope Benedict, Our holly father, Servant of the Servants of God, talking about AIDS in Africa last week announced,

“You can't resolve it with the distribution of condoms, On the contrary, it increases the problem."

So guys if you engage in some sort of sexual activity please do NOT use condoms by any means. It can worsen AIDS problem and it will not help protecting you from those sorts of diseases.

(A reply to BeyondFrame)

When it comes to so call Tamil Struggle in Sri Lanka, there are few deferent views among Sinhalese out there. The first group of Sinhalese haven’t spend a day in their life to learn what it is, but pick a bit from there and bit from here like a old cow in a barn, eventually surrender to someone else’s assumptions since it is easiest thing to do. Then there is other group, who honestly don’t bother. I kind of like this attitude for so many reasons. They accept all the terrifying bombs, never-ending war and daily bad news as a fact of life like in-laws or neighbors. The other group opposes to the Tamil Struggle and they are very well annoyed by it. The last group, that I assume Beyond Frame also belongs to sympathized the Tamil Struggle and believe in a root cause. They believe by treating root cause, we can solve the terrorism too, which is a part of so call Tamil Struggle. It is quite logical and sensible approach.

Beyond Frame wrote this blog about black struggle in America and current situation of black community. Even thought it received very less attentions than his usual fiery posts, that is a topic I find very interesting. He suggests, rightfully, we should look at similar situations in other countries, such as Black issues in America and compare them with our own issues.

Here is my comparison.

1. Minorities always get their ass kicked.
There are minorities in every country, Tamils in Sri Lanka, Muslims in India or Gays in America. They all get their ass kicked one time or another. I find American homosexuals issue is pretty interesting to look at. Blacks, who were discriminated back then, voted for a bill to discriminate Gays in California this year. My point here is, there is no country without faults. Correcting them is a journey, not an event. Sri Lanka also had her faults, she corrected lot of them, there is lot more, and we will correct them along the way too.

2. Minorities always win.
Minorities always win rights at the end. But they never win rights only for themselves; instead they create rights for everyone. If any minority group gains rights only for themselves, it won’t pass the brutal test of time. Blacks in America did not won rights only for blacks, they create set of Civil Rights that can enjoy by whites, blacks and every other color in that country. Tamils in Sri Lanka are not fighting for set of civil rights like how blacks did in America. They are exclusively demand for themselves. Whenever situation is such, they have to use excessive amount of violence to achieve such goal. And even if they successive, it cannot survive without continues use of force.

3. Conflict is a Compulsory Evil
If you look at history of any free country, it is the minorities, who always won rights for everyone and make the country better each time. Even though face of Tamil Struggle is selfish terror campaign, as a byproduct, Sri Lankan social structure may possibly improve.

3. Black vs Tamils, discrimination.
This I find quite interesting. Blacks were slaves and Tamils were not. I guess until British gained control of the whole island, Tamils who was the ruling class of the Kingdom (also elite Sinhalese) had Sinhalese Slaves (source: Kanadian court records) and owners had rights to punish even by the brutal act of amputation. After the power swap, Tamils dominated the upper class of the country, and Sinhalese worked as servants for them. Now there is nothing wrong with serving anyone and matter of fact, if you talk to those old people who spend their youth as servant-boys, they still speak very highly of their Tamil masters and they have a bit of pride too. This is complete opposite to the African American situation.

13% of Americans are black, but they all speak English or Spanish, not Kiswahili. Or any time of the history they did not demanded any African language to be an official language. And matter of fact, use of African tongue was banned all together back then. Now talking about Language, English was the Language in Sri Lanka until Bandaranayaka changed it in to Sinhala “with reasonable use of Tamil” (the part everyone forget to mention when they talk about this), and later on, Tamil also considered as national language.

Unlike blacks in America, Tamils in Sri Lanka had access to Parliament since the day one. When blacks were fighting to sit front of the bus, Tamils are demanding 50-50 seats in the parliament. Democracy or parliament may not be perfect, considering it is the democratic system that banned gay marriages in US or been gay a crime in SL, still democracy have ability to self correct and do the right thing. Therefore it is the best system we have so far, and Tamils had all the rights (or even more than Sinhalese) to participate in it.

More than Sinhalese I said? Yes. Let me explain why. By Sri Lankan constitution, Tamils have exclusive right to own lands in north of the country while they also have freedom to own land in any other place of the country. In otherworld, Sinhalese could not own land in north of the country till this day. That gives Tamils possibility to represent the parliament from any part of the country as they usually do, while rest do not have same possibility.

My point of all these examples is – Tamils were not discriminated as such as Blacks or quite possibly not even as much as Sinhalese. Now again, I do not deny Tamils were discriminated (or gays or children) or I don’t say blacks are not discriminated in America even now either.

4. Separate county.
Black struggle had three diferent goals, overlapping each other time to time. Specially in early ages, they wanted to go back to Africa. They thought Africa is the rightful place and quite large number of Black Americans moved to Liberia. It is quite contrary in Sri Lanka. They fought to stay here first and then they gave up the complete idea, Tamilnadu is their homeland.

Second face of black struggle is a separate state. This mainly lead by Elijah Muhammad and supported by Malcolm X at some point. Now this is very much equal to Tamil Struggle in Sri Lanka by so many ways. They both had influence of other countries and backing of religion. But this face did not work out for black people and did not work for Tamil people either.

Third and most successful face is Civil Right movement lead by MLK and others. MLK valued and respected America deeply. Let me repeat it again. MLK value and respect America deeply, the country that kept his people as slaves for hundreds of years, baned reading or writing, vote, and even owning property. This is totally opposite to Tamil Struggle in Sri Lanka which the main tactic is destroying Sri Lanka economically and structurally (that they did quite well)

MLK speak in Montgomery:

“We are here, we are here this evening because we're tired now. Now let us say that we are not here advocating violence. We have overcome that. I want it to be known throughout Montgomery and throughout this nation that we are Christian people. We believe in the Christian religion. We believe in the teachings of Jesus. The only weapon that we have in our hands this evening is the weapon of protest. And secondly, this is the glory of America, with all of its faults. This is the glory of our democracy. If we were incarcerated behind the iron curtains of a Communistic nation we couldn't do this. If we were trapped in the dungeon of a totalitarian regime we couldn't do this. But the great glory of American democracy is the right to protest for right.”

5. Where is Tamil Beyond Frame.
Beyond Frame and many other Sinhalese, continually speak for Tamil rights; criticize the government all the time. But I have not seen a single Tamil criticize even the most terrible acts of LTTE (well, except Anandasangari). Some says, because Tamils are scared of LTTE. Well, Sinhalese also die for criticizing the government isn’t it? And Beyond Frame still speaks his mind and it is same with the black community in US too. But end of the day, all Tamils voices are very much monolithic.

Unlike Black struggle, only two things can put a stop to Tamil Struggle. Tamil Rights are not one of them, because Black struggle is a struggle for rights. But Tamil struggle is not. Giving them what they are fighting for, asking for, can stop the Tamil struggle, which is a separate country. Or a Tamil leader who value and respect Sri Lanka with all her faults, just like MLK did, can put a stop to so call Tamil Struggle too.

I was reading all those arguments about private universities these days here, here and here and thought of writing an answer to all of them at once. So here it is. I’m trying to keep that in point form, so it is easy for anyone to challenge each point.

1. It is not free higher education. It is closed education.
It is true; one characters of our higher education system is “free” price tag, among other characteristics, such as class room education or weekday classes. But all those characteristics belong to a closed education system. When someone refers to free higher education system, they are defending or arguing not about the free price tag as one might think, but they are referring to the closed system.

2. “Free education” was an answer to a monopoly. Not meant to be a monopoly.
Until free education reforms, aristocrats were created by church, which had enough wealth to provide education with a free price tag to selected few, who they thought deserve to be educated. There was no challenge to such a monopoly back then, since concept of privately organized institutes was none exists. So government with a surplus budget did the right thing by breaking the monopoly of religion. Also in Early 1900s, Sri Lankans (and most of other countries) had unrestricted access to Europe where there was best organized higher education system in the world, for relatively cheap price. Free education was implemented in ADDITION to that, not as a REPLACEMENT. But this access and price tag dramatically changed after WWII.

3. Assumed Intelligence vs Wealth.
One argument keep on popping up loudly is, “fairness”. By letting people with private wealth access to knowledge openly, forces assumed intelligent without wealth, struggle “unfairly”. A person who simply passed A/L is no better or any special than illiterate Kamalawathi, who worked in Jordan and generated wealth for the nation. I can’t possibly see the principle behind the philosophy of assumed intelligence needed to be treated specially than proven wealth. I would be very glad if someone can explain the philosophy behind this argument.

4. A/L is not a way to decide intelligence.
There are three sub points:
1. One most arrogant and offensive argument coming up time to time is, people for open education or against close education are A/L dropouts. Let me simply say it is not true.

2. If only intelligent people deserve to be educated, then A/L is not the way to prove intelligence. Einstein, Da Vinci, Edison, Picasso, Churchill, Jefferson, Washington, Ted Turner, Richard Branson, Henry Ford, they all are dyslexic, therefore without what so ever possibility to be a success in Sri Lankan education system.

3. Even we have a solid way to locate intelligence; it is an unacceptable argument to say only intelligent people deserved to be educated. Intelligence is a result of education (whatever the form of education it may be), not education a result of intelligence. Therefore this argument fundamentally wrong.

5. People in Sri Lanka are poor and therefore they cannot afford Higher Education.
Simply not true. Those so called poor people already spend on higher education. Unfortunately may not on their own children, but on other group of kids selected by the government. Still that, closed education system is not an alternative to finical aid or scholarships. Open education system can increase the level of finical aid and scholarships to the people who rightfully deserve.

6. Where is our Socrates?
We have invested so much on a closed education. But what it has given us in return, that an open education system could not provide? All our major wealth generating industries base on human labor and contributed by people without higher education or higher education is not required. Right now people without higher education support and fund the higher education system and results of higher education system. A shame! Now please don’t tell me Sri Lankans work in NASA. A country can live on pride alone.

7. Where is the return of investment?
Education is a direct investment. It is perfectly alright for government to invest on individuals, but if those individuals could not payback, as a nation we should immediately look in to more profitable investments, such as milk cows.

8. Closed education system creates a form Aristocracy.
Back then Queen used to choose aristocrats, but in the absence of a Queen, our government chooses individuals and creates an elite group of people separated from the rest. They were provided free exclusive knowledge required for special set of jobs that do not open to rest of the society. As the same way Queen commissions her aristocrats, we commission our elite group to each of those jobs that may secure their future till death. This system morally and ethically contradicts with democracy. Whenever someone propose to open up the education to public, these aristocrats, start to bully the public viciously, the same way British aristocrats used to do back then.

I honestly don’t know any other country in the world that denies their people access to knowledge that we desperately need in this century. I don’t know if it is a crime to deny people education, but I know it should be a one.

Shall We?

I’m not a big fan of blaming west for our own mistakes like most of us usually do in our spare time. Colonization is a too old word, usually meaning "robbing other people, and building the Museum of London". Even though colonization is outdated, like Windows XP or Disco, there are new releases, such as modern-colonization or neo-colonization. I don’t know what the exact meanings of those words are, but I begin to believe it is the same process of robbing other people, but ingeniously, without building railroads like they had to do last time. Whatever it may be, I’m not here to blame British for that. Let them have the things they took from us, and even let them action those as they wish, and let us move on with our lives.

Taking about moving, I came cross another visa related insult today (here). This time British officials start to inspect passengers departing Sri Lanka at the Bandaranayake Airport, (which we named after Bandaranayake family just like everything else in here) like it their grandmother’s kitchen. It seems they are there to inspect and stop passengers as they wish. I’m used to them treating me like a common thief. But this is the first time they start to make sure that I feel absolutely worthless about myself as a human being even before I leave the country.

The common and most accepted excuse for this sort of dominant and submissive relationship between west and rest of the world is, we are the people from third world countries, immigrate to their neck of the woods and rob their way of life, the same way they robed rabbits from imperial garden. I don’t know when human migration becomes a crime. It was perfectly fine till last century, since the time Eve got kicked out of Eden for playing naked with a big snake. It is part of natural human survival mechanism to migrate to richer and safer lands as the surface of world changes. Even that, we all know, it is not every single person leave Katunayaka airport, migrating to some other country where there is a Royal family without a dental plan.

This is all about keeping us behind the queue, or in other words, they staying front of the queue displaying us their behind. Even before the time of Globalization, British knew the opportunity value comes with traveling. The Grand tour was not only about getting laid in Venice, it is about young British gentleman finding new opportunities in the ever changing world. By making traveling is uttermost difficult and insulting thing for us to do, they make sure we won’t have the sort of an opportunities they are having. A legal or natural British (Shell Gas or Barnaby from Lancashire) can roam around the earth freely, and find better and more profitable opportunities before everyone else. A young client of mine, a British lad in early 20s, visited Sri Lanka with his brother regarding a new business he wanted to start. It was cheap and easy for him, and most of all; he had the opportunity to expand himself globally in early age of his life without whatsoever restrictions, while same opportunities were denied to us very aggressively.

Behalf of our spineless leaders, I would like to tell all the British Airline Liaison Officers at Colombo Airport, please go kiss a cunt of a cow.

It was the latest entry, so I would not miss it. This is what it says.

"If you like to have a calm vacation, then don’t go to Sri Lanka. The corruption will kill the joy of traveling around. You will be told how poor the country is. Hmm… I don’t think so if u look to what prices there are on everything, it’s cheaper in Europe and don’t forget, clean."

I thought commenting there, because commenting on every single blog in the world is one of my bad habits among many other such habits, but most importantly, as a child, every word I heard about Sri Lanka ended with glorious ST, such as greatest, prettiest, oldest and then usual world ‘paradise’. When one used to hear such nice things for long time, it quite painful to see those kinds of posts popping up here and there and you feel unstoppable desire to say “it is not true”.

But then I realize what it say there is true. Every bit of it. Sri Lanka is not a calm quite place. Not anymore. Either it is screaming TATA buses fly over our roads or bikers on Bajaj bikes ride like they don’t have families, children or reason to live another day. It is good we don’t have salesmen using loudspeakers vigorously promoting their merchandise, such as lottery tickets or religion. But we are far from been the quite calm place we used to be. Still there are enough beggars waiting to surround any tourist bus with their rented baby’s hanging on their arms or amputees rolling on tiny carts. A lady told me about her experience once and I’m quoting her, “when we get down at Kandy, he rolled toward us like a crocodile in dark, making all of us shiver”. Another lady told me about souvenir sales people, “When I was at Mihinthale, they separated me from the rest of the group, and forced me to buy a Souvenir. I didn’t get down from the bus since”. If you escape all those horrible encounters, then there are nationalist nut cases too, that you may occasionally bump in to. I came across such a horrible person at top of the Sigiriya, who scold one of my foreign friends for standing inside “king's Palace” and accused him for disrespecting our thousands of year’s old Royalty.

What I’m trying to say is, Sri Lanka is not the hospitable, wonderful, and "ST" place it used to be. I remember when I was young; the neighborhood I grow up had an unholy reputation as the “Korea”, and I thought about it while I’m looking at the sky line of port city of Busan some time back. There, young kids around 10 years old, cross the road alone, late at night, shop whatever they came for, and walk back home softly. Young school girls, walk home after night school around 10 at night, giggling at each other, wearing those short stripe skirts that they ware that part of the world. A pretty girl wearing short club dress, licking an ice cream, cross the road middle of the night, far from the town and went toward her way like it is Sunday morning. And that is a beautiful country. And the "Korea" I grow up in, well, we still live there.

If you enjoying reading those useless history books that we never learn anything from, you may have an idea us Sri Lankan has to face some sort of invasion from Indian subcontinent, every couple of hundred years. Just like Colman McCarthy once said about Pacific, we live in peace between wars, like being vegetarians between meals. I think it is the correct for any country you find on the world map or any other map not from this world, such as one from the Lord of the Rings.

War is an armed conflict that decide not who is right, but who is left at the end. It is more or less like a surgery. Bloody, painful and must not let come to it. But if you are unfortunate enough to engage in one, keep it short. If the current war in Sri Lanka is like any other war in human civilization, such as Peloponnesian War or Second World War, we should have seen an end to it long time back or at least last week when LTTE practically lost their military capabilities.

LTTE never had capacity to win a war with Sri Lankan army or any other actual army in that manner. Not back then, defiantly not now. This war started 25 years ago, when Michael Jackson used be black and top of the charts and even before Amy Winehouse was born. This dragged for so long because of two reasons. The first one been past Sri Lankan governments really didn’t want to end it. The second and most impotent one, defiantly the reason why the war did not end last week, because this is War Theatre, conducted front of live audience.

Audience of our War Theatre is western institutes such as Amnesty international or any western government that you may heard demanding human rights, ceasefire, media freedom and things in that nature, we all would like to have by the way. We do not hold parliamentary debits about Afghanistan or Iraq and demand ceasefire from British government like how British care to stop their daily activities early this month and debit about Sri Lanka and demanded a ceasefire.

"Why?", one of my friends asked me. Majority say it is the influence of Tamil Diaspora drive west to behave like that. Some say it is great conspiracy against Buddhism. But I think it none of above. I believe, It is the same reason that drives Nalin De Silva to criticize west even when he write about weather and it is the exact same reason some of our nationalistic bloggers find tremendous joy in economic misery in west. Buddha explained this behavior as “Maana” (මහා මානය, හීන මානය සහ සම මානය) in personal level and advice to be free from it. G.W.F. Hegel put it in broader social level, “We claim who we are by differentiating ourselves from others”. An obvious example, we may look at a bird and see, we don’t have feathers or wings and we don’t eat worms, so we are not birds and we are better. So does the west look at beyond the line they draw as west, define themselves from comparing to others, not in physical appearance but in their way of life and values. They believe they fought and won human rights, freedom of speech and such social values and therefore it is their organic values and others such as American Indians, Orients or Chinese or even Sri Lankans are inferior in such values, therefor they are the Westerners and Westerners are better. Just like our president have to say a Buddhist saying in UN meetings, British parliament have to debit about Sri Lanka, and about other countries, to remind their own selves, who they are.

The war didn’t ended as it naturally suppose to be, when LTTE lost their military capabilities, because LTTE find a way to manipulate this cultural sense of the west.

I don’t blame LTTE for that, because it is human nature to manipulate the environment for our benefit. For an example, if you are Tamil and poor, you cannot go to British high commission and apply for economic asylum and there is no such a thing call economic asylum, even when hunger more painful than lost of political freedom. But like someone commented in a previous post, you can burn your own hand and apply for political asylum and there you will get it. If you are a journalist, most probably they will not issue you visa to report British parliament debits, but they may grant you political asylum. This visa principle alone become a major reason for Sri Lankan war to continue, killing more than 70,000 humans, because it gave an opportunity for people to manipulate it and also west an opportunity to feel superior in the list of value that they use to claim who they are.

If it is not for west obsession of human rights, LTTE would not keep a human shield right now. The only reason LTTE do such a thing is not because they want protection, because they want to see civilians been harmed, so they can stimulate institutes such as Amnesty international. I don’t know who attacked the hospital last week, but LTTE stopped people from leaving the hospital because they wanted to show something dramatic to their audience. It is not only LTTE, reporters say how Harms leaders literally hide behind their own children and attract enemy fire in to dramatic locations like schools or hospitals. This is not war. This is War Theatre played for an audience. People like M.I.A goes around talking about genocide, not because we Sri Lankans stop our daily activity and go around killing Tamil people, because it is part of War Theatre. LTTE did not let civilians go, because it is part of War Theatre. Red Cross places an order of staggering amount of body bags not because they had to use it, because it is War Theatre.

LTTE will keep on manipulating their own people as long as they can, just to keep up their audience.

No. I’m not disturbed by everybody. If you are a Tamil gentlemen live in Canada or somewhere else in the world, who subscribed to “One cyanide capsule per a child” program runs by LTTE, them I’m not mad at you. If you are a hip-hop star who has not visited Sri Lanka since puberty, but talk about Sri Lanka like you know everything, then you cool. I’m not mad at you either. If you shamelessly steal credit card at the pump for LTTE, you are smart. I have no reason to mad at you since you have not stolen my credit card yet. If you are in a hunger strike to force the government to stop the offensive in north, I’m not mad at you at all. God bless you all.

But if you are not any of the above, but a proud Sri Lankan Tamil, then I am extremely mad at you. Why is that you asked? Because you people honestly don’t care about your own people. You live in relative safety in south, complain (rightfully) about all the difficulties you have to go through in south, but you don’t have empathy for the thousands of innocent Tamils LTTE caging inside the war zone, for their own benefits. You didn’t bother to open up your mouth and say, “let my people go”. Or at least write a single blog about it. Just a one blog. At least a comment. No. Nothing. You don’t care.

The only Tamil person who care to say something about that is Mr. Ananda Sangari, that I start to admire more and more every day. But other than that, I hear no voice at all, like when LTTE do things to Tamil people; it does not hurt them for some strange reason I’m not capable of understanding. I see, I hear so many Sinhalese passionately talk, argue, blog about misconduct of the government or injustice happened to Tamil people. Worry about collateral damage. But haven’t seen any Tamil person say anything remotely opposed to the conduct LTTE deliberately putting Tamil people in harm’s way and using them as human a shield.

Sometimes this not so pleasant behavior of moderate Tamils makes me thinks, I may be wrong. May be all Tamils are terrorists. May be they all single mindedly support and sacrifice for LTTE. That is why they never ever say anything against LTTE, no matter whatever they do to Tamil people. Because they all assist LTTE.
